Energy Release Rate Analysis for Adhesive and Laminate Double Cantilever Beam Spec- imens Emphasizing the Effect of Residual Stresses
نویسنده
چکیده
The mode I energy release rate, including the effect of residual stresses, was evaluated for both adhesive and laminate double cantilever beam specimens. The energy release rate can be partitioned into a mechanical term and a residual stress term in beam theory. The beamtheory mechanical term is not very accurate, but can be corrected by a slight modification to a previous correction factor. This correction factor accounts for crack tip rotation of the specimen arms. The beam-theory residual stress term is very accurate for a wide range of specimen geometries; it can be used without correction. The consequence of ignoring residual stresses is that one measures an apparent toughness instead of a true toughness. The error between the apparent toughness and true toughness can be calculated for a given specimen geometry and amount of residual stresses. Such errors can be large and are often larger than the correction required for crack-tip rotation effects. In double cantilever beam specimens used to study laminate delamination, the errors are large when the delaminating arms, considered by themselves, are unsymmetric laminates. Some experimental methods are suggested which can used to correct for residual stress effects.

Fracture Mechanics of Composites with Residual Stresses, Traction-loaded Cracks, and Imperfect Interfaces
By partitioning the total stresses in a damaged composite into either mechanical and residual stresses or into initial and perturbation stresses, it was possible to derive several exact results for the energy release rate due to crack growth. These general results automatically include the effects of residual stresses, traction-loaded cracks, and imperfect interfaces. By considering approximate...
متن کاملFracture Mechanics of Composites with Residual Thermal Stresses
The problem of calculating the energy release rate for crack growth in an arbitrary composite in the presence of residual stresses is considered. First, a general expression is given for arbitrary, mixed traction and displacement boundary conditions. This general result is then applied to a series of specific problems including statistically homogeneous composites under traction or displacement...
متن کاملOn the Calculation of Energy Release Rates for Cracked Laminates with Residual Stresses
Prior methods for calculating energy release rate in cracked laminates were extended to account for heterogeneous laminates and residual stresses. The method is to partition the crack tip stresses into local bending moments and normal forces. A general equation is then given for the total energy release rate in terms of the crack-tip moments and forces and the temperature difference experienced...
متن کاملResidual Stress Effects in Fracture of Composites and Adhesives
Because composites and adhesive joints are made from different phases with different thermal expansion coefficients, they inevitably develop residual thermal stresses. When designing composites or adhesive joints, it is important to account for these residual stresses. It is not the magnitude of the residual stresses that matters, but rather the effect of those stresses on composite failure pro...

The mode I interlaminar fracture toughness of stitched and unstitched composite laminates of continuous UD flax fiber and epoxy matrix was experimentally and numerically investigated. A twistless flax fiber yarn was used for stitching purpose. The mode I interlaminar energy release rate of the unstitched and stitched laminates was experimentally determined through Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) t...
